US: Ready to help N.Korea fight coronavirus

Feb 14, 2020

Washington DC (USA), Feb 14: The US government says it is prepared to help Pyongyang prevent the new coronavirus from breaking out in North Korea.
US Department of State Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus issued a statement on Thursday. It said the United States is deeply concerned about the vulnerability of the North Korean people to a coronavirus outbreak.
She went on to say that her country strongly supports and encourages the work of US and international organizations. Ortagus added that the US is "ready and prepared to expeditiously facilitate the approval of assistance from these organizations."
The statement comes as the North continues to take measures against the spread of the coronavirus.
Pyongyang considers the matter an important political issue related to the country's survival. It has suspended flights and trains to and from China.
Observers say the US move may be aimed at improving confidence and breaking the deadlock over the denuclearization talks.
The US has kept its sanctions in place, but the country has allowed humanitarian aid workers to visit North Korea.
